A Sample of Hip Hop
One of the main things wrong with Hip Hop today is the lack of Sampling. Any producer knows, that sampling can get you in big trouble today. These days everyone wants to sue and copyright issues are a major concern. THIS IS ONE OF THE ISSUES KILLING OUR CULTURE!! Hip Hop was founded on sampling, which is the glue that has held our music together.
Which brings me to today. We were able to keep the soul of our music alive by sampling say….a Ray Charles record…or a Chaka Khan record…and re inventing it. That way the new generation knows about who came before them, even if they aren’t aware they are partying to a Rick James record.
Sampling is the glue that connects every generation to the next. The reason some of today’s commercial artists have lost their way, is because of the lack of knowing where the music comes from. As you can tell from the videos above, to quote Dead Prez, “It’s bigger than Hip Hop”…it’s soul music, and music in general that creates our culture. Sampling encourages people to dig, and research where the music started, without that you get the soul less rappers that we have on stations like B.E.T
Here is a quote and a video from Redman that sums it all up:
"I added that to my show. Cypress Hill's ['How I Could Just Kill A Man'] into ['Time 4 Sum Aksion']," Red said, after being asked about his catalog connection to Cypress Hill. Still a deejay hobbyist, Redman then spoke about the decline of that in Hip Hop. "That ended because we got more viral. We got more media coverage on this whole Hip Hop game now. Samples caused a major problem. Back in the day, you could snatch a record, snatch it right quick, and you ain't have to clear shit. Now, you gotta clear every-fucking thing."

Word up.... I do believe that people deserve a right of ownership for something that they have work hard on, u kno.... but I agree wit u that people are startin to lose their love for sampling and taking producing as more of a joke.... We gotta respect that art and understand that, like ma man styles mentioned, sampling is one of the most important parts in music that glue it together.... Right from the violins and shoe tapping beats to the funky rap beats to the underground and new skul beats we have now, they have played an important part in it.... Newy, the main point is that people shud understand that without sampling, HipHop wouldn't be where it is today.... Much love and much respect to ma man Dee Styles here for spreadin the message :) word up bro
I look at it as paying homage to the music that i love. Sometimes it's a direct connection to the song to get that same vibe we grew up with, for that old familiar feelin. And sometimes the sample is so small and used in such a different way that it becomes something entirely new. One of the best at this Was J Dilla. I've heard tracks from him that i really had to rack my brain to figure out where it came from because he created something so different. And once I do figure it out I gotta go listen to the original again. It's also a way to give people something familiar and new at the same time.
I agree, Hip Hop started with sampling, it's just another facet of this culture of ours that we put together piece mail. Our culture was stripped from us and we had to create something new. And to be quite honest we as black americans have had almost everything we've done stolen from us, so the way i see it, everything's fair game.
YO THIS IS A NICE ARTICLE REALLLY HADF ME THINKUNG DIDNT KNOW WHERE U WAS HEADIN AT FIRST ,BUT YEA I KNOW FOR ME LISTENING TO HIP HOP CONTAINING OL SKOOL SAMPLES REALLY EXPANDED MY KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC IN GENERAL ,BECAUSE I WOULD HEAR THESE DOPE BEATS AND ASK WHERE THEY CAME FROM THEN HEAR THE ORIGINAL AND ITS LIKE ONE INGREDIENT THAT U CAN COOK UP IN 2 DIFFERENT FLAVORS...GOOD WRK DEE!
