Rappers reinventing themselves
Ok folks, Let's get straight to it....LIL'KIM DON'T MAKE ANYMORE DISS SONGS, NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR IT. Ok, maybe her die hrd fans do want to hear it, but let's face it, that isn't a relevant number anymore. I have love for Lil' Kim and I support her theory that her image (I don't like the world swager) was jacked by Ms. Manaj, but Lil' Kim is not a battle rapper, therefore we don't want to hear her battle.
Now to tie this in with the tittle of this article, Lil' Kim is an established, trend setting, icon in the game (dare I say). Her legacy was set by being raunchy, extremely sexual, almost female pimpish, NOW YOU WANT US TO BELIEVE YOU AS A BATTLE RAPPER? You never had one battle in your long lasting career, so you can't switch lanes now Kim. Rappers who just came out, like Manaj, can do that and be more credible because nothing about her is set in stone yet, basically she is still trying to figure out what her legacy will be if any, but Kim already has one.
Since this article is about rappers reinventing themselves (after establishing themselves), allow me to speak on some other rappers who's fans might question their change of direction...heeeeeeeeeeere we go.....
Redman! Why, Why, Why!? You are Mr. Muddy Waters, not Mr. Autotune. I don't know if your just experimenting or what, but my question is, why do it now? You have always been known for your grittiness and your "supaman lova" antics, now you want to introduce the world to Reggie Noble...Ain't y'all the same people? I have not heard all of your mixtape, but my homeboy who loves REDMAN like I do has it, and he was left disappointed and utterly confused with all the autotune and commercial reaches on it. If your single is any indication of the rest of the music...then I might just have to pass.
Redman - Fly found on Hip-Hop
Now on to the GREAT, the EXTRAORDINARY, MC that they call Hammer (can't touch this). Now for you I will make it short, and sweet. YOUR AN EMCEE THAT MADE DANCE SONGS, why do you old artist want to battle now.....you are not believable Hammer! I'm not gonna say whether of not you should still rap (probably not) but you DEFINITELY should not make battle songs against Jay Z, or anybody else for that matter. Your remix was A LITTLE better, but that's because you were not rapping on it.
